Purpose: We measured urinary aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), B2 (AFB2), G1 (AFG1), G2 (AFG2) concentrations in urine samples of a representative Korean population, and investigated their inter-relationship.
Materials and methods: The study subjects were 1018 individuals (463 males and 555 females) who were probability sampled according to age, sex and province. Their urine samples were concentrated with an immunoaffinity column, and urinary aflatoxin concentration were measured using an HPLC system with a KOBRA cell and a fluorescent detector. Geometric means and correlation coefficients were estimated and statistically tested.
Results: AFB1 was detected in 10, AFB2 was in 44, AFG1 was in 158, and AFG2 was in 374 urinary samples, respectively. The geometric mean of unadjusted urinary AFG1 concentration, and creatinine-adjusted AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, and AFG2 concentrations were significantly higher in females than in males. With data of all samples, correlation coefficients between any 2 concentrations were all statistically significant. With data including aflatoxin-detected samples, however, only the correlation coefficient between AFG1 and AFG2 concentrations, though absolute value of which was just in the middle, was significant.
Conclusions: These results suggest that Koreans are exposed to low levels of aflatoxins, and females are exposed to aflatoxins slighty more than males. Co-contamination of AFG1 and AFG2 would not be more frequent than that of AFB1 and AFG2.
